Scroll of Sorrow

An Interactive Visualization of the Atomic Bombings' Impact

INTRODUCTION

This project aims to vividly illustrate the devastating impact of the atomic bombings on the population of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. The visualization is divided into three key timelines: before the bombings, on the first day of the bombings, and within four months after the bombings.

As users scroll down, they gradually uncover a larger portion of the image, symbolizing the massive loss of life. The extensive scrolling, requiring nearly 25 scrolls, is designed to evoke a sense of cognitive distress, allowing users to viscerally experience the magnitude of the death toll. This immersive approach aims to create a deep emotional connection and a deeper understanding of the historical tragedy. The scrolling action serves as a metaphor for the emotional journey, compelling viewers to reflect on the overwhelming human cost of the bombings.

ATTENTION TO DETAILS

The figurines in the video symbolize the men and women of Japan, dressed in traditional kimonos. Rendered in grey, these figures starkly contrast with the vivid red backgrounds, symbolizing their deaths and the bloodshed conveying the somber reality and the gravity of the loss experienced by the Japanese people.

In the final scroll, the visualization poignantly transforms into the flag of Japan, paying homage to the country's resilience and honoring the lives lost. This powerful moment serves as a salute to Japan’s enduring spirit and a reminder to respect the profound suffering caused by these events. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings are among the darkest chapters in human history, and it is crucial to honor the pain and loss endured by the victims and survivors. Through this project, I aim to create a space for reflection, remembrance, and respect, ensuring that the legacy of those affected continues to be acknowledged and honored.
